For the last ten years, I have focused my practice on helping individuals and couples in the area of sexuality and relationships. I have found that when a person has a happier and more satisfying sex life, their self-esteem improves, their sense of wellbeing is enhanced, their relationships flourish, and their overall physical and emotional health benefits greatly. As a physician specializing in psychiatry, I saw the amount of people struggling with sexual dysfunctions, anxieties related to sex, desire difficulties, or just with questions in search of good information and knew this was an area that could not be ignored.
Sex therapy is a talk-based therapy that addresses the specific issues related to sex that the person/couple is having. A detailed history will explore any medical, lifestyle, personal, or relationship factors that may be contributing to any sexual issues. A personalized treatment is given which may include talk-therapy, specific exercises to do at home, medications, and/or lifestyle considerations. Although the classical method of sex therapy may be used (as developed by Masters and Johnson, later modified by Helen Kaplan), often other interventions are needed.
Some examples of conditions treated are:
Inability to have sex (vaginismus or erectile dysfunction)
Pain during sex
Lack of sexual desire
Difficulty reaching orgasm
Psychological contributions to sexual compulsion (behavioral component must be concurrent)
Sexual symptoms from hormonal imbalances
Anxiety about sex
Loss of erection prior to orgasm
Often there is a considerable amount of anxiety that not only contributes to sexual difficulties, but also is a result of the sexual difficulties. This can change the dynamic of a relationship as well as continue to worsen the issue for the individual or couple. The earlier that sexual issues are addressed, the easier it is for that person to resolve it and get on to experience a more satisfying sex life and relationship.
