Our body-mind is constantly adjusting and readjusting its balance of hormones to maintain important bodily functions while responding to factors in the environment. When thinking about hormones, it is important to understand that all of the hormones in the body-mind work in concert together, so that you cannot change one without affecting the balance of all the others. Because of this, simple hormone supplementation without examination and consideration of the entire system will leave a person unbalanced and simply stressing another part of their system.
In my practice, I provide such analysis and hormone supplementation. Please note that I use bio-identical hormones (hormones identical in molecular structure to those produced in your own body) that are natural for your body-mind, as well as vitamin and herbal supplements to keep the system in balance. Some of these already come in a prepared form (patch, cream, pills), but other times compounded hormones are used when there is no existing pharmaceutical available.
When treating hormones, there is a priority determined by the way the body-mind adjusts the hormonal balance. In treating hormone imbalances or deficiencies, that order that must be followed to prevent further misalignment of the system. This order is as follows:
(Adrenaline, Cortisol, DHEA, Insulin)
(Thyroid hormones – TSH, T4, T3, rT3)
(Testosterone, Estrogen, Progesterone)
Often what looks like a deficiency in one hormone can really be your system trying to adjust for an imbalance in another hormone. Without finding and addressing the source of the imbalance, your body-mind will continue to be misaligned creating a state of declining health. You cannot take one hormone without affecting the balance and function of all the other hormones in the body.
Careful laboratory evaluation helps look for imbalances, and is crucial for follow up of hormone levels and tracking that balance. Certain genetic testing can also help clarify individual differences in both the way your body metabolizes its hormones as well as the way it uses vitamins and minerals. Being aware of deficiencies in how your body handles these can uncover important individual treatment strategies.
